When we think of coastal interiors, we often picture bright summer days, whitewashed walls, pale blue accessories and sunlight sparkling on the sea. However, living in Pembrokeshire has taught me that the coast is just as beautiful during autumn.
As the season changes, the sea becomes darker and more dramatic, the surrounding landscape is filled with deep greens and the beaches become quieter. There is nothing better than returning to a warm, cosy home after a blustery coastal walk.
Autumn coastal style takes inspiration from this moodier side of the seaside. Think stormy blues, forest greens, weathered wood, cosy blankets and a few playful puffins. You don’t need to live beside the sea-or completely redecorate-to bring some of this relaxed coastal feeling into your home.

Choose a Darker Coastal Colour Palette
For autumn, replace the pale aquas traditionally associated with coastal décor with richer, deeper colours. Navy, midnight blue, sea green, teal and forest green all capture the colours of the coast on an autumn day. I always think if you choose colours from nature, they coordinate naturally together.
These darker shades look beautiful alongside warm neutrals, such as cream, oatmeal and soft grey. You could also introduce a little accent of rust, ochre or berry through smaller accessories to reflect the changing season.
You don’t need to paint an entire room. A dark blue feature wall can look wonderful, but cushions, curtains, bedding, throws, lampshades or a new rug will also introduce the colours without a big decorating project if you don’t want to regularly redecorate.

Add Playful Puffin Accessories
Puffins are one of my favourite ways to add character to a coastal home- I am puffin crazy! They always remind me of Pembrokeshire and the wonderful wildlife found around our coast, including on Skomer Island.
Puffin accessories can work throughout the year, but their distinctive black, white and orange colouring looks especially lovely against dark blue and green during autumn.
Look out for puffin cushions, mugs, ornaments, prints, tea towels and bedding. A framed puffin illustration by a local artist would make a lovely feature too.
The key is to choose one or two pieces that you genuinely love. This will give your home a playful coastal touch without making it feel too themed-or as though you have recreated an entire seaside gift shop in your living room!

Layer Up Cosy Textures
Texture is what transforms a coastal room from fresh and summery to warm and inviting.
Add chunky knitted blankets, velvet cushions, brushed cotton bedding and soft rugs. Navy velvet, bottle-green corduroy and natural linen work particularly well together.
Keep a basket of blankets beside the sofa for chilly evenings. Woven and seagrass baskets are perfect for this because they add natural texture while providing useful storage.
Layering different fabrics also stops deeper shades from making a room feel too dark. Instead, the room will feel comfortable, relaxed and ready for autumn.

Take Inspiration From the Real Coast
Coastal style doesn’t have to mean covering your home with anchors, sailing boats and seashells. Look at the colours and textures you see during an actual autumn walk beside the sea.
Here in Pembrokeshire, that might include dark water, cloudy skies, mossy rocks, weathered wood, ferns, pebbles and windswept grasses. Old harbour buildings, lighthouses and traditional cottages can also provide plenty of inspiration.
Displaying your own photographs is an inexpensive and personal way to decorate your home. Choose a favourite picture from a local walk, beach day or family adventure and place it in a simple wooden frame.

Bring in Natural Materials
Natural materials complement a dark coastal colour palette and help create a relaxed, lived-in home.
Try adding rustic wooden shelves, wooden picture frames, stoneware vases, woven rugs or rattan storage baskets. Reclaimed and weathered wood can bring to mind driftwood and old harbour buildings without being overly nautical.
If you already have wooden furniture, you may simply need to rearrange it or add a few carefully chosen accessories. Autumn decorating doesn’t have to mean buying everything new.

Create a Cosy Coastal Reading Corner
Autumn always makes me want to slow down, curl up with a book and make the most of a cosy evening at home.
Create a small reading corner using a comfortable chair, a dark green or navy cushion, a warm blanket and a little table for your book and favourite drink. Add a lamp (I can only read with good lighting nowadays), a basket of books and a photograph or print of a place beside the sea that you love.
Even if you don’t have space for a dedicated reading corner, you can create the same feeling at one end of the sofa or create a cosy reading den filled with coastal themed books for the children.

Use Warm, Atmospheric Lighting
As the evenings become darker, lighting makes a huge difference to how a room feels. Instead of relying only on the main ceiling light, use smaller lamps to create warm pools of light around your home.
Lanterns, fairy lights and battery-operated candles can all add a cosy glow. If you enjoy home fragrance, look for autumnal coastal scents such as sea salt, cedarwood, amber or rosemary.
Always place real candles somewhere safe, particularly in a busy family home with children or pets.

Give Your Kitchen a Coastal Update
The kitchen is an easy room to update with just a few seasonal accessories. Try navy or green tea towels, puffin mugs, coastal oven gloves, wooden serving boards or dark blue storage jars. A stoneware vase filled with dried grasses or a bowl of red and green autumn apples will add warmth and colour. These small changes can make the kitchen feel seasonal without getting in the way of everyday family life.

Puffins in the Bathroom
Puffins are perfect for bringing a playful touch to an autumn coastal bathroom. I love the puffin bathroom range from Next, especially the adorable puffin bath mat, which adds character while still fitting beautifully with a deeper coastal colour palette. Pair it with navy or forest-green towels, natural wood accessories and a few woven baskets to create a bathroom that feels cosy, practical and inspired by the Pembrokeshire coast.
Make Your Coastal Home Personal
The loveliest homes aren’t perfect show homes. They tell the story of the people who live there. Display photographs from family days out, artwork by local makers, favourite maps, books about the coast and special items you have collected over the years. If you use beach finds, make sure they have been collected legally and responsibly.
A home inspired by the coast should remind you of real places, happy memories and days spent together—not simply follow an interiors trend.
Autumn coastal style is less about recreating a bright summer beach house and more about capturing the feeling of coming home after a windswept walk beside the sea. With dark blues, deep greens, natural materials, cosy textures and a puffin or two, you can enjoy the beauty of the coast throughout the cooler months.
