It’s Blogmas Advent Day 23- Happy Christmas Eve Eve all! We’ve been busy today doing the last of our fresh food shopping, delivering presents and tidying so I haven’t taken many photos. So here’s just a quick snap of setting up ready-to-make reindeer food tomorrow.
Making Reindeer Food
The RSPCA’s reindeer food mix is glitter-free (even ‘edible’ glitter is very bad for wildlife and flying reindeer), and requires only simple store cupboard ingredients.
- A handful of wild bird seed (which may include sunflower hearts, naked rolled oats, dried mealworms, yellow millet, kibbled peanuts and black sunflower seeds) – this is what helps the reindeers fly!
- A few rolled oats
- Some dried fruit, like cranberries (if you have a dog, please don’t use grapes, raisins, sultanas or currants as these can be poisonous for dogs)
- Some dried insects – Rudolph and his bird friends love mealworms and waxworms
- Some grated cheese
- A hint of chilli powder – it helps keep Rudolph’s nose glowing red! Don’t worry, birds can’t taste it but it will stop squirrels and rodents from stealing the food before Rudolph arrives..
Mix it all together, then sprinkle it on your lawn, put on a bird table or leave it in a bowl by your front door just before you go to bed.
No Sew Fabric Reindeer Food Bags
We usually reuse the same containers every year for our reindeer food, but this year we seem to have left them up the attic. I was going to just put them in small cups or brown paper bags and then I came across the lovely Bambi fabric in the photo. So we’re going to cut out circles and make quick no-sew reindeer food bags, tied with ribbon and a bell and poem. I love the fabric.
