Day 15 of Blogtober- we’re almost halfway through- and today’s prompt is: Finding Warmth Without the Fire: What are the unconventional ways we seek comfort as the weather cools down? This isn’t unconventional, but I’m going to write about the very wholesome way of keeping warm without a fire this autumn and winter: by knitting and crocheting.
Wool Warms You Twice
Many years ago, the kids and I went to see a lovely production of Stig of the Dump at our local theatre. One of the songs they sang contained the lyrics: “Wood warms you twice, once when you chop it and then when you burn it…”. I often say the same about wool: “Wool warms you twice, once when you knit it and then when you wear it.” Okay, so I know, knitting is not as strenuous as chopping wood, but it is a way to keep your hands moving during the cooler months and I think it’s important to keep moving to warm up. It’s also a great way to create items that also keep us warm!
How Knitting and Crochet Can Keep You Warm During the Autumn and Winter Months
As the crisp autumn air sets in, many of us are reaching for our cosiest sweaters and blankets. But if you’re a knitter or crocheter, you don’t have to rely on store-bought warmth—your handmade creations can keep you snug through the colder months, too. Not only are knitting and crochet relaxing hobbies, but they also offer practical benefits, like helping you stay warm with cosy accessories and garments. Let’s explore how these crafts can help you beat the chill this autumn and winter.
1. Layer Up with Handmade Clothing
The beauty of knitting and crochet lies in the ability to create custom-made clothing that fits your style, needs, and climate. From chunky knit sweaters to fine crochet shawls, you can layer up in garments tailored to your exact preferences. Yarn choices can provide insulation while remaining breathable, making them perfect for autumn and winter wear. Here are some ideas for warm, handmade clothing:
• Sweaters and Cardigans: Chunky knits offer maximum warmth, while lightweight wool blends can serve as cosy layering pieces.
• Scarves and Shawls: These are not only fashionable but incredibly functional. Crochet a lacy shawl for early autumn or a thick scarf for when winter kicks in.
• Hats and Mittens: Knitted or crocheted accessories can add an extra layer of warmth without a huge time commitment. We love knitted fingerless gloves at this time of year. They’re quick and easy to make even for beginners. They are perfect to wear while working from home typing and for days out when you still want to take photos. Thank you to my Mum for making me and the kids lots of pairs too! Izzy loves to mix rather than match hers!
Bonus: they make great gifts for loved ones! Also, keeping your tools tidy helps, especially when you have many projects on the go. A crochet-friendly knitting needle organizer can make a big difference, so you spend less time searching and more time creating.
2. Home Comforts: Blankets and Throws
Nothing beats the feeling of curling up under a handmade blanket when the wind howls outside. Crocheted afghans and knitted throws provide the perfect balance of warmth and weight, offering comfort throughout the colder months. As the blanket starts to grow, it already starts to warm you as it covers your knees while you’re still knitting it. Great Granny always has a blanket on her knitting needles for new babies being born in our town. Whether you’re watching a movie or reading a book, wrapping yourself in a handmade blanket adds an extra layer of cosiness to any fall or winter day.
Consider these projects to warm up your living space:
• Chunky Knit Blankets: Thick yarn and oversized needles make these blankets easy and quick to knit. They’re ideal for providing warmth on particularly chilly nights.
• Granny Square Afghans: Crocheted afghans made of granny squares are not only beautiful but customizable in colour and size. Plus, they offer a retro aesthetic that’s timeless.
3. Warm Your Feet with Socks and Slippers
There’s nothing worse than cold feet in the winter, but knitting or crocheting your own socks and slippers can help solve that problem. Wool yarns, especially those blended with nylon for durability, make for warm and long-lasting footwear. You can also make cosy slippers to wear around the house, keeping your feet toasty and comfortable even on the coldest mornings. If you want to dive into knitting or crocheting footwear, try:
• Knitted Socks: The process may seem intimidating, particularly if you’re new to knitting in the round, but once you master it, knitted socks are rewarding projects that provide year-round warmth.
• Crocheted Slippers: Simple patterns for slippers can be quickly crocheted in just a few hours and are excellent for beginners looking to experiment with yarn thicknesses and textures. They look so pretty!
4. The Health Benefits of Knitting and Crochet
While staying warm is a practical reason to pick up your knitting needles or crochet hook, there are of course mental and emotional benefits to these crafts as well. The repetitive motions of knitting and crocheting can be incredibly meditative, reducing stress and anxiety. As the days grow shorter and darker, taking time for yourself to work on a project can also boost your mood and provide a sense of accomplishment. Many people, including myself, find that crafting helps them unwind at the end of a long day, and the focus required can help distract them from the stresses of daily life. This makes knitting and crochet perfect autumn and winter hobbies, especially when seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and the winter blues begin to creep in.
5. Sustainable Warmth
If you’re looking for a sustainable way to stay warm, knitting and crochet are excellent choices. By creating your own clothing, accessories, and blankets, you can reduce the need for mass-produced, synthetic materials. Plus, choosing eco-friendly yarns made from natural fibres, recycled materials, or ethically sourced wool allows you to craft in an environmentally conscious way. Handmade items also tend to last longer than store-bought ones, and you can easily mend or repair them if they wear out over time. Crafting with sustainability in mind not only reduces waste but also adds value to the things you make, ensuring that they remain treasured pieces in your wardrobe or home for years to come.
Knitting and crochet are more than just hobbies—they’re practical tools for staying warm and cosy as the temperatures drop. Whether you’re bundling up in a handmade scarf, snuggling under a crocheted blanket, or gifting a friend a warm pair of mittens, your creations can keep you and your loved ones warm throughout the chilly seasons. And as a bonus, the act of creating can provide relaxation and joy, making those long, cold nights much more enjoyable. So, grab your yarn and settle in for a cosy winter of crafting—your future self (and your cold toes!) will thank you.
