It’s Day 1 of Blogtober and today’s suggested theme is “Fall Fading: Embracing Impermanence: Discuss the idea of impermanence, both in nature and in personal life, using fall as a metaphor”. I’m going to write about how impermanence during Autumn can be a lesson from nature. This time of year can be a struggle living with the dark mornings and dark nights, and cold and damp weather (we’re lucky it’s been sunny and warm today!), but knowing it will pass always gives me hope. Just like in the darker days in life, we get through because we know one-day things will be different. “This too shall pass.”.
Embracing Impermanence in Autumn: A Lesson from Nature Blogtober
As the first crisp breeze of autumn whispers through the trees, it brings with it a quiet reminder of life’s impermanence. The vibrant greens of summer slowly change into golds, oranges, and reds, the colours of Autumn, transforming the landscape into a beautiful impressionist painting. In this seasonal shift, nature gently nudges us to reflect on change and the transient nature of all things. It reminds us that nothing stays the same.
The Beauty of Letting Go
Perhaps what makes autumn so captivating is its clear demonstration of letting go. Trees, once heavy with lush foliage, now release their leaves with grace and purpose. Each falling leaf is a symbol of the cycles of growth and decay that define life. In witnessing this surrender, we’re reminded of the power in releasing what no longer serves us—whether it’s old habits, outdated beliefs, or attachments that weigh us down. There’s wisdom in knowing when to let go, just as trees instinctively know when to shed their leaves. This shedding is not a loss; rather, it’s a preparation for renewal. The trees, stripped bare, create space for rest and regeneration. Similarly, embracing change in our own lives often clears the way for new opportunities, growth, and experiences that we might not have imagined. People say that Spring is a time for hope, but actually, perhaps we are most hopeful during the autumn and winter months. If you want to make things different, you have to make changes to get different and hopefully better results.
The Comfort in Change
We humans can sometimes be naturally reluctant to change. Autumn’s changing landscape is a visual metaphor for the transitions we experience in life. Change can be uncomfortable, even unsettling, but nature shows us that it is also inevitable and necessary. The once-vibrant leaves wither and fall, but they enrich the soil, nourishing future growth. From this cycle of life, death, and rebirth, we learn that change doesn’t mean the end—it signifies transformation. Impermanence doesn’t only apply to what we lose; it also extends to what we gain. Moments of joy, achievement, and connection are just as fleeting as those of pain and struggle. Understanding this can help us appreciate the present more fully, knowing that it too will pass. Each season of life brings its own gifts, and autumn reminds us to cherish them while they last.
Nature’s Quiet Reflection
As the days grow shorter and the air turns cooler, autumn invites a slower, more introspective pace. The bustling energy of summer fades, making way for stillness and contemplation. This time of year, with its muted light and falling leaves (beautiful!), encourages us to turn inward and reflect on the impermanence in our own lives. What are we clinging to that needs releasing? What aspects of our lives are ready to transform? In the quiet rustling of leaves, we can hear the wisdom of nature, reminding us that change is not something to resist, but something to embrace. Just as each leaf must fall, so too must we allow parts of our lives to fall away, trusting that what comes next will be equally beautiful in its own way. It’s natural to be sad about the good parts of our life changing. I can just sob when I remember that this phase of my life as a mum, having all my children living with me, is just temporary, but I have to look forward to seeing my children flourish as adults and leading their own lives and, enjoying the next stages of our futures too. Life is not just one static moment in time, we have to enjoy the ride.
Finding Peace in Impermanence
Impermanence can feel daunting, as it challenges our desire for control and certainty. But autumn teaches us that change, while inevitable, is not something to fear. The ephemeral nature of life is what makes it precious. By accepting impermanence, we can learn to live more fully in the present, appreciating each moment for what it is—temporary, yet meaningful. In autumn, we find both the ending of a cycle and the promise of renewal. There is peace in knowing that even as the leaves fall, life continues in its rhythm. The bare trees stand not in mourning for what was lost, but in quiet anticipation of what is to come. And so can we.
As we walk through the golden days of autumn, let us take a cue from nature. Embrace the beauty in the transitions, the wisdom in letting go, and the peace in knowing that nothing lasts forever. In accepting impermanence, we find a deeper appreciation for the present moment and the ever-changing flow of life. This autumn, allow yourself to be still, observe the natural world around you, and reflect on the impermanence that shapes your own journey. Let the falling leaves remind you that change is not an end, but a necessary part of life’s beautiful and ongoing transformation.
