Let’s say you are a year away from finishing your formal education and you are looking for a career that suits your personality, which definitely involves outdoor activities. No 9-5 office job for this girl, indeed, she is looking for a challenge, physically and mentally, and with that in mind, here are a few career options you may not have considered.
- Personal trainer – Why not ride the fitness wave that is currently sweeping the UK? Commit to 4 years college; some on-campus and some online, then you will be a certified personal trainer who can work anywhere you like. Start by working for your local gym and after a couple of years, go freelance or seek a plush job at a Thai wellness retreat, helping clients to get fit and lose weight. Ongoing training leads to higher qualifications and you could get into the pro sports arena, working with top athletes.
- Security – The security industry is booming and if you have a good physique and like working with people, you can get certified to work in the security sector. Crowd control, on the doors at evening entertainment events and even escorting stars through the crowds! You would have to take quite a few courses in self-defence and protection techniques and maybe even get certified to carry firearms. It is important that you don’t have a criminal record if you wish to enter the security industry, as all applicants are screened.
- Fashion model – If you have the figure for it, why not exploit your good looks and become a fashion model? You could make good money modelling going out dresses for online clothing catalogues. Sure, it would be great if you could make it to the top of the fashion model world, but there are many working behind the scenes who make a very good living modelling clothing. Ideally, you would be tall and slim with a bubbly personality.
- Heavy goods driver – Girls are not excluded from the trucking industry; if you are a good driver, make the investment to get your HGV Class 1 and you can drive any rig. You could be driving to Southern Europe delivering IT equipment and the return trip sees you hauling fruit; you will definitely get to see foreign countries and drivers are in short supply in the booming logistics sector. Hourly rates are high and you get overnight allowances and can sleep in your rig; a great career if you like solitude and being your own boss.
- Train to be a vet – Attention animal lovers! Why not learn how to treat animals? 4-5 years of study would see you as a qualified vet and you would be working with experienced vets for most of the time, while classroom learning makes up the rest of the course. Visiting farms would be a large portion of your work; this is a challenging career and is only suitable for those who love animals.
- Farming – If you’re prepared to travel and you love hard physical work in the great outdoors, you can work fruit and veg picking; take the winter off or work in a fish factory in Iceland, or you could work in a warehouse until spring comes around. Working in the fields is a healthy way of life and you get a lot of satisfaction knowing you are bringing food to the table.
- Working on ships – The myth that women can’t work on ships has been debunked; start searching online to see the positions that women can apply for; see the world on a state-of-the-art cargo vessel; the other alternative is working on cruise ships, which is a unique experience. The cruise sector is enjoying a boom and all the big cruise liners offer family friendly cruises; search online for education requirements to apply for a position working on a cruise ship. After a few years, you could move into lower management and have your own cabin cleaning team; there aren’t really qualifications to train for cruise ship work, rather they are looking for the right mindset, a desire to please and the ability to deal with anything are more important when working on a cruise ship.
The above are just a few ideas for you to consider; take your time choosing, apply yourself 100% at all times and you should progress in your career. Career planning is part of the UK curriculum but if you are older, you can use the Internet to find out what you need to know about any potential career.
Sadly, too many people dread going to work and if you want to avoid such a scenario, develop an interest and study to become certified, then you will get paid for doing what you love.
