Human hair is wonderful stuff, it’s part of our look, something people are attracted to. Some of us are naturally blessed with an abundance of it, but many people feel like they don’t have as much hair as they would like! If you are one of them, don’t feel bad, you are in good company! Popular movie stars and singing idols like Zendaya and Ariana Grande add to what they were born with by using hair extensions!

Hair extensions are not a new thing, let’s now delve back through time to find out how this wonderful tradition got started!
- Ancient Egypt – Way back around 3400 BC the ancient Egyptians, famed for their really big grave markers, pioneered the practice of really big hair! Having a head with a thick covering of hair was viewed as a status symbol, and both men and women of high social standing wore hair extensions. Queen Cleopatra wore a wig, and so did famed Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor when she played the part for the silver screen!
- The 16th Century – Fast forward to another queen named Elizabeth, the 1st, who wore a variety of hair pieces and wigs throughout her illustrious reign. Rumour has it that she lost hair during a bout of smallpox, so in order to look her best she had tightly curled, red hair extensions fashioned for her. She started a fad, and pretty soon all the wealthy and well-to-do women of the era were wearing them, too!
- The 17th and 18th Centuries – King Louis XIII of France became a trendsetter by being the first well-known man to wear a wig. Of course, others followed suit and pretty soon all the nobles and wealthy men of France donned them! Later, King Louis XIV would carry on the custom, wearing sumptuous wigs and long hair extensions. The tradition ended with Louis XVI when he lost his head and his wig went with it, after the hungry French populace had their fill of cake.
- The 19th Century – Hats. Everyone wore hats. Hats everywhere! We shall now move on to-
- The 20th and 21st Centuries – Wigs re-entered the world of fashion thanks in part to movie stars putting them on for the camera, a tradition that continues with today’s movie and music stars.
The thing is, you don’t have to be a famous star to enjoy wearing a hair extension and looking the way you want to! People of both sexes and all walks of life add to their natural hair to achieve that special look they desire! So, if you wish you had more hair, what’s stopping you?
