We all need more romance in our lives, especially during February, the month of love. With Valentine’s Day coming up it’s time to think about ways you can create more intimacy in your relationship. Take a look at ten ways to make your bedroom more romantic for Valentine’s Day and all year long:
1. Dust the Cobwebs Away…
The first thing you need to do is have a quick declutter and tidy up. Pop everything back into its rightful place. Then give the room a quick clean and open the window to give the room a good airing. Make the bedroom a haven that you both want to spend lots of time in.
2. It’s All About the Bed…
The bed is the most important part of the bedroom. For the ultimate romantic bedroom choose a four-poster bed. Although the initial purpose of these beds would have been protection from insects, they have evolved into symbols of luxury, romance and privacy—a “room within a room” to enjoy each other.
Alternatively, a sumptuous silver crushed velvet bed will add elegance to your romantic boudoir. If you prefer a classic style, you can’t go wrong with a solid wooden bedframe to be the centre of your room.
4. Fresh Bed Sheets
Whichever bed you choose, freshly clean sheets are always inviting. Choose crisp white bed linen or bedcovers in warm colours. Layer up with a coverlet and a couple of extra cushions for a luxurious, romantic feel.
4. The Lighting of Love
Choose soft lighting for romance in the bedroom. Soft light creates a sense of intimacy by reducing harsh shadows and creating a smooth and gentle transition between light and dark areas- it has the bonus of being very flattering. Turn the main light off and consider investing in a dimmer light. Turn the bedside light on and add some string lights to make the bedroom feel cosy and enchanting. If you have strip lights choose a soft, warm colour to add to the romance created in the bedroom.
5. Light a Candle
Flickering candles will also add to the soft, romantic light in the bedroom. Choose scented candles for a sensory experience. The most seductive scents are verbena, ylang-ylang, jasmine, and lavender. Make sure you place the candles in a safe place away from any draughts and remember to blow them out.
6. Say It With Flowers
Fresh flowers always look lovely in the bedroom and they have significant meaning. The most romantic flowers to choose from are roses, peonies, orchids, calla lilies, lisianthus, carnations, tulips and ranunculus. Take care choosing their colours too. Red roses have symbolised love throughout history, firmly cementing their status as the romantic flower of choice, but other colour roses can have romantic significance, for example, pink roses are interpreted as a sign of admiration. Perhaps certain flowers have significant meaning in your relationship- the flowers on your table as you enjoyed your first meal out, the first bunch of flowers they bought you or your wedding bouquet? If so, choose these for a personal touch.
7. Sentimental Signs
Motivational and sentimental wall art doesn’t just look good, it can help us feel better too. Even if just subliminally, seeing words and messages of love and romance in the bedroom will make us feel more positive. Whether it’s a simple neon sign saying “Love” or a poster of your favourite romantic quote, these affirmations will make you and your bedroom more romantic.
8. Display Your love Using Photos
Celebrate your relationship by displaying your favourite photos in the bedroom. Hang a portrait on the wall, add a favourite snap in a photo frame on the bedside table or peg lots of your favourite snaps to a photo string. This is a lovely way to remind you both of your happy memories and to encourage you both to print out new photos of you together each year.
9. If Music be the Food of Love, Play On…
Set the mood with music. Make a playlist of your favourite songs throughout your relationship. Don’t forget to include “your special song” and enjoy listening to it together.
10. No Distractions
You’ve created a romantic bedroom, now you just need each other and no distractions. Turn the work phone off, if you have kids- book a babysitter and close the door to pets (we all know the dog will want to hog the bed!). Be organised and have everything you need ready for your romantic evening together- food, drink, massage oil… so you can enjoy this special time together in your intimate haven.
