I first discovered the benefits of arnica when I was pregnant with my eldest child. One of the pregnancy books recommended packing arnica into my hospital bag to help heal the bruises after birth. I packed arnica tablets and arnica cream and made use of both of them during my recovery. Since seeing the healing benefits for myself, I have always kept arnica cream in the home. Read on to find out five uses for arnica cream in your family first aid kit:
Arnica montana (A. montana) has been used for centuries in the homeopathic system of medicine for the treatment of 66 pathological conditions, frequently contusions, wounds, rheumatism, and inflammation.

5 Uses for Arnica Cream in Your Family First Aid Kit
1. Reduce Bruising
Arnica helps reduce bruising and discomfort. It can stimulate your body’s natural healing process, facilitating blood flow through the area, which helps to alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and reabsorb bruising.
When your injury results in bruising apply arnica cream to help bring out the bruise and reduce it.
2. Relieve Joint and Muscle Pain
Arnica Cream is also said to ease pain and relax sore joints and muscles.
“The (arnica) plant contains an active ingredient, helenalin, which in small concentrations can be beneficial as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic,” explains Dr. Tran.
Massage arnica cream onto the affected area.
3. Calm Rashes
Arnica can also be super beneficial to your skin in many ways. There’s a reason why it’s often the active ingredient included in creams to help treat acne and rashes. Arnica’s pain-relieving and soothing effects help by reducing your desire to scratch, which can prevent the rash from spreading further.
If you have a rash or insect bite, apply arnica cream to calm the irritated skin and nerves.
4. Reduce Swelling
The active chemicals in arnica may also reduce swelling. This makes it a useful ointment to buy in preparation for swelling after surgery. It can also be used to treat other ailments caused by swelling, such as osteoarthritis, arthritis, plantar fasciitis and gout.
Apply arnica cream to the affected area to help reduce swelling.
5. Improve Circulation
Arnica is said to stimulate white blood cell activity, thereby improving circulation. Expert herbalist Lorraine Hughes praises Arnica for its ability to relieve pain by getting the blood flowing. She notes that Arnica “helps provide circulation to the tissues” in an affected area. Circulation can be of particular concern in the extremities, so if you frequently have cold feet, getting an extra blood flow boost could be a major benefit so use arnica to help increase circulation.
Massage arnica cream into the affected area to increase circulation.
A Bonus Beauty Benefit of Arnica Cream
A bonus benefit of arnica cream is it’s great for reducing dark circles and puffiness under the eyes too. I would advise you to use a formula that is specially created for use under the eyes as this is a delicate area.
