When the kids go back to school and the weather cools and dampens, I find coughs and colds begin to spread. We need to look after ourselves and keep our immune system strong. The best way to improve our immune system is to eat healthy. If I start to feel sluggish, I like to treat my body to a healthy and delicious Honduran Sea Moss smoothie. Read on to find out how I make the Honduran Sea Moss Gel to add to my immunity-boosting smoothie:

Honduran Sea Moss
“Harvested along the Honduras coastal line close to the former home of Dr. Sebi, Honduran Sea Moss is a nutrient-rich superfood that is recognised for its range of health benefits. This superfood packs in the nutrients (92 in total), ensuring it is an all-in-one solution for your body’s wellbeing.”
Due to being nutrient-rich, this edible sea plant is rightly regarded as a superfood that can help people’s health in numerous ways. I have to admit, as a vegan, I’m not keen on the taste of most seaweeds or anything with an “ocean” flavour- I can’t even take a kelp tablet. Therefore, I find the easiest way to absorb the goodness of Sea Moss, is to make it into a gel and add to a delicious smoothie. You can’t taste it at all I promise.

Making Honduran Sea Moss Gel
First, buy 100% Organic Honduran Sea Moss. It comes in a handy pack that keeps it fresh and can be resealed.

I use half a pack at a time to make a jar of sea moss gel, which can be stored in the fridge. Make up the desired amount for your needs.
Use a colander to thoroughly wash the sea moss.

Place the washed sea moss into a large bowl. Cover with enough filtered (or bottled but never use unfiltered tap water) to cover the sea moss. Place the bowl in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, your sea moss will have expanded in the water.

Rinse the expanded sea moss thoroughly with fresh cold water.

Place the washed sea moss into your blender. Cover with fresh filtered water.

Blend the sea moss and water together until it becomes a smooth jelly or gel consistency.

Transfer the blended gel into a glass airtight container and keep it in the fridge.

Use it in your recipes as you wish. I usually add two tablespoons to my Immunity Boosting Smoothie recipe, which serves two people. WebMD states that “Early studies suggest that sea moss can boost the immune system”. Dr. Melinda Ring, the executive director of the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, reminds us to be aware that sea moss contains high levels of iodine, which can damage your thyroid if consumed in large quantities. She recommends taking no more than two tablespoons of the gel at a time and using it every other day, rather than every day.
