As your child grows up, they will need to learn how to do things for themselves like tidy up and get ready for school. There may be a long way yet but making a few changes to their routine here and there can help them to get used to the idea. We have a few great tips to help you from an independent boys’ school in London.
Find the Right Time
Timing is key. Children, especially those with autism, don’t like change. They thrive from routine and structure whereas change brings on stress. To introduce new tasks for them to do, do so at a time where there is little else going on.
Let The Student Become the Master
Children love pretending to be grown-up. To encourage them, give them plenty of opportunities to try for themselves and show you how to do it. That way you’ll also be able to help them when they make any mistakes.
Be Gentle
It will most likely take your child some time to perfect things. They will make mistakes and learn along the way. The way that you address their mistakes can affect their confidence and willingness to try, which is why it is important to be gentle. Avoid telling them that they are wrong and instead show them how they can do things even better.
Patience
Following on from the last point, it’s important to be patient. Give your child the time to do things for themselves, whether that takes 10 minutes or an hour. As they get used to doing them, they will naturally get faster and feel more confident.
Consider Where They Are in Their Development
As children grow older, they have more understanding and develop new skills. What you expect them to pick up should be based on this to avoid confusion.
