Congratulations- you’ve found your soulmate and you’re planning to get married. You may have already chosen your wedding rings and be looking forward to the day you exchange them. Traditionally, once women are married they wear both their wedding and engagement rings on their left-hand ring finger. The wedding ring is placed on the finger first so it is closest to the heart and the engagement ring sits above. This arrangement often leads brides wondering, how will they wear their engagement ring on their wedding day? While there is no right or wrong answer- do what feels best for you- here are a few suggestions to help you decide:
How To Wear Your Engagement Ring on Your Wedding Day

Wear Your Engagement Ring on Your Right Hand
People often say engagement rings are the brilliant beginning of your romantic love story. You will have been wearing this symbol of love and devotion since the day of the proposal. It can feel strange to take it off or to put it on your other hand but traditionally, brides will wear their engagement ring on their right hand during their wedding day. This leaves the left-hand ring finger ready for their partner to place the wedding ring onto, during the service. After the ceremony, you can slip the engagement ring on top of the wedding ring. This is a symbol to protect the sacred wedding band and bond of love.
Wear Your Engagement Ring As Usual
It’s not the traditional choice but some brides choose to keep their wedding ring on their left hand. The groom (or bride) then places the wedding band on top. After the ceremony, the bride then rearranges the order of her rings.

Wear Your Engagement Ring on a Chain
Some women choose to wear their engagement ring on a chain around their neck, as a necklace on their wedding day. Whether you prefer diamond or moissanite rings, every bride wants to show off her engagement ring on the big day. Wearing it as a pendant is a great way to set off your wedding dress and wedding ring.
Solder Your Engagement ring To Your Wedding Ring
Some brides choose to solder their wedding ring to their engagement ring. If you’re considering doing this, why not get it done before the wedding day? If you choose to buy your ring from a store that sells custom made jewellery you may find they offer soldering services too. Of course, it will mean you have to leave off your engagement ring for a couple of days or weeks while the rings are soldered. But it will be worth it when both rings are slipped back onto your ring finger on your special day.
Leave Your Engagement Ring Off
Occasionally, whether on purpose or accidentally, brides leave their engagement rings off completely on the wedding day. This way their betrothed can just slip the wedding ring onto their left-hand ring finger and after the wedding, the rings can be arranged accordingly.
As I said earlier, there is no right or wrong way, it really is just a case of doing what suits the bride and groom (or bride and bride) best. If you’re still not sure how you want to wear your vintage engagement ring on your wedding day, you can always ask your jeweler for advice. They can provide guidance on how to best showcase your ring and make it look its best alongside your wedding band.
