The last year of lockdown, social distancing, and self-isolation is one that’s been pretty tough on all of us. It’s been something that none of us could ever really have expected and it has often been far more challenging than a lot of people thought it would be. After all, who could have guessed that “staying at home” would end up being so difficult? But if there’s one time where lockdown is going to be the biggest challenge, it’s over the holiday periods. Christmas is the time of year where people’s traditions often involve them connecting with all of the people that they love and that’s going to be a whole lot harder this year. However, that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom. Here are just a few things that you can do to make life a little easier when spending the holidays in lockdown.
Don’t hide yourself away
It can be so upsetting to spend the Christmas period in lockdown that it’s somewhat tempting to just hide away and become even more isolated. But, unsurprisingly, doing that is just going to make things worse. Take this chance to connect with the people you love however you can. Send flowers to people that you won’t get to see, set up family Zoom calls so you and the kids can all have the chance to talk to friends and relatives. There are all kinds of ways to stay connected to people, you’ve just got to be willing to make the effort.
Find something positive to do
Wallowing is something that’s pretty tempting when you’re in lockdown. After all, you’re stuck at home so what else can you do? But the truth is that the best thing that you can do in lockdown is to try and find some positive way to spend your time. There are plenty of things that can take your mind off the state of the world. Maybe you start binging a series that you’ve always meant to check out. Maybe you take up yoga. Maybe you just get really into making sourdough! Whatever it is, finding something positive to do can take a lot of the edge off being stuck at home.
Remember that it won’t last forever
One of the biggest sources of frustration during lockdown is the feeling that it’s just going to go on forever. However, that’s not the case. This situation will end. It might take a while and it may be seriously frustrating but it will end. And when it does, there won’t be any of us taking our freedom to get into the wider world for granted ever again.
As frustrating as it can be, it’s important to remember that these lockdown rules are in place for a reason and that reason is the safety of just about every single person on the planet. It can be easy to want to just break a couple of rules to have a more positive holiday period but the truth is that it’s far better to make some sacrifices this year so that we can get through this faster and be back to normal by this time next year.
