I hope, if you “celebrated” it, that you all had a lovely Halloween. It was different this year but we still made memories. Here’s what we got up to during Halloween this half term.
The kids did a few Halloween and Autumn crafts and baking over half term. Caitlyn made these Spooky Skull Biscuits. It’s so nice now the kids are old enough to cake (and clear up!) themselves. They mainly made pancakes over half term!
Izzy took the time to do a lovely cutting and sticking activity- making an Autumn Wreath out of a cereal box. She’s planning to make a Poppy Wreath this week and then it will be time to make a Christmas one! This year is going scarily fast as we’ve all missed out on a good few months of life, haven’t we?
I’d planned to spend an afternoon making an Autumn Wreath with my mum and sister, but due to the Welsh Covid Firebreak Lockdown. I couldn’t meet up with them. We’re hoping to be allowed to meet up (socially distanced!) to make Christmas wreaths together. For now, we made our Autumn wreaths “together, apart”.
On Halloween, we had to go to the optician for an essential appointment (we’ve postponed since shielding in March). This meant we got to see some of the Halloween Yarn Bombing in a nearby town.
We obviously only went from the car to the opticians and back again but it was lovely to see some of the town’s decorations.
I bet Pennywise is a scary sight if you see him unexpectedly at night!
We usually spend Halloween with family but obviously couldn’t this year. We had some essentials we needed to drop off so I told the kids to get ready early so they could show them their costumes.
It’s a shame we couldn’t go in and spend time with them but at least we got to see them briefly.
Then it was back home to celebrate Halloween. Also over half-term, they carved their pumpkins all on their home. I used to also find this a bit of a chore when the kids were younger (my hands would hurt after carving at least four) so I love just supervising while they get on with it now. Danny helped Izzy, of course!
We also made pom-poms for our Halloween Pom Pom Garland. Izzy and Caitlyn made Milk Carton Ghosts. The girls all did lots of Halloween drawings and colouring in.
This year Izzy was a vampire, Caitlyn a werewolf, Rebecca a Zombie Prom Queen and Danny was a pigeon! All things they’ve been before apart from the pigeon!
I attempted to take a selfie with all the kids but failed. I can just spot Rebecca and a scary werewolf in the background!
We had hot dogs for tea, enjoyed a Halloween Quiz with Ceri and Lexy and Mum, Jo and Cerys and then watched The Lost Boys while enjoying our “treats”.
So, despite lockdown and missing people, we managed to enjoy our day.
Now we come to the end of Half-Term, we have one more week left of the Firebreak, but the kids go back to school tomorrow. Personally, my gut is saying to close schools, but I know, while that would be the best decision for our family, it would be hard for others. I wish there was a choice for shielding families who don’t want their kids to go to school currently but also don’t want to take them out of school permanently. It’s horrible being worried to send your children to school.
Stay safe and well all!
