Based on Carnival Films’ Emmy award-winning television series, the feature DOWNTON ABBEY sees the original cast return, alongside a host of newcomers. The incredible ensemble cast has been applauded by critics as a sumptuous and satisfying banquet of intrigue, scandal, humour and heartache” (Chris Hunneysett, Daily Mirror). The film chronicles the Crawley family one year after the conclusion of the series, as they prepare for the most important moment of their lives: an impending visit from the Royal Family. Join the glitz, glamour and spectacle as the special visit unleashes scandal, romance and intrigue on the fan-favorite family and its staff members. Lauded as “full of glamour and British charm” (Danielle Southwood, Best) the film comes from the series screenwriter and producer Julian Fellowes, and producers Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge.

The motion picture will also be available in a Deluxe Limited Edition, featuring the Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and Digital Code, presented in exclusive packaging along with a collectible photo book and recipe cards. Available only while supplies last, this special offering is the must-own gift for any Downton Abbey fan or to add to your own collection.

Do I need to watch Downton Abbey the TV Series before I watch Downton Abbey the movie?

No, I admit I’ve never watched an episode of Downton Abbey before (I know!) and enjoyed watching the movie as a stand alone film.  If you do want a quick catch up, watch this video in which  Lesley Nicol, the fabulous cook,  Mrs. Patmore, gives a useful catch-up on all the characters upstairs and downstairs of Downton.

I always meant to watch Downton Abbey on TV,  but somehow missed the first series and struggled to catch up.  I’m definitely going to watch them as I love a period drama and can see it would be perfect Sunday night TV!  You don’t need to have watched the show but a love of period dramas would be needed (Dave didn’t sit and watch this with me as it’s just not his thing).

Downton Abbey The Movie:  Our Thoughts

I’ve been lacking a good period drama to watch since I binge watched the latest series of The Crown, therefore I’ve been looking forward to watching Downton Abbey The Movie.  The film is set a few years after the series in the glorious 20’s,  “It’s 1927 and we are modern folk!”.  From the beginning, I was impressed with the sumptuous cinematography-  the wide shots of autumnal leaves falling on the lush green of the Crawleys’ estate and the chugging steam train were just beautiful.  We soon hear the exciting news that  King George V and Queen Mary along with their daughter Mary are coming to stay and much of the movie is preparation for the royal visit.  There’s something very soothing about watching the household professionally (if on times flustered) prepare for this occasion.

In addition to the beautiful scenery, buildings and photography there are also beautiful people and I love the style portrayed in the movie.  You can check out the Downton Abbey movie costumes in this article.

The royal visit from the king and queen of England soon unleashes scandal, romance and intrigue — leaving the future of Downton hanging in the balance.  I found Downton Abbey the movie a glorious, comforting watch full of wit and drama!

Downton Abbey The Movie is available on Digital now and Blu-ray and DVD on 27th January 2020 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
