There’s nothing worse than a dark room. Light is one of the best tools at your disposal when you’re decorating a room so if you’ve got a space that only has one small window and sucks up all of the light, it can easily end up looking dark and dingy. Nobody wants to spend time in a room like that so you need to do something about it. Luckily, that’s not as hard as you might think. Just use some of these simple hacks to help you brighten the place up.

White Shutters
Curtains are great, but they’re pretty heavy and they suck up a lot of the light. In a larger room with plenty of light, they work well. But in a smaller room that doesn’t get much natural light, they’re not very good. You’re much better off going for some timber plantation shutters instead. They have a much lighter appearance which is ideal for a darker room. If you go for some nice white ones, they’ll also reflect a lot of light around the room instead of taking it in like a thick pair of curtains will. The other major benefit of having shutters is that you can open them a bit so even if you want a bit of privacy in the room, you can still make sure that you’re getting light in.
Minimalist Design
Lots of floral patterns or bold colours might work well in some rooms, but they make the space feel incredibly cluttered. When you’re decorating a dark room, you want the opposite effect. That’s why you want to focus on minimalist designs. Try not to put too much furniture that will block the light in there and keep on top of the tidying so the room doesn’t get filled up with clutter. That will only make the situation worse. Focus on simple but elegant designs and don’t try to cram too many different colours in there.
Accent With Black
You might think that black is out of the question when decorating a dark room but when used right, it can actually have a positive effect. You should be using lighter shades for the bulk of the walls and the large pieces of furniture. But if you accent it with a little bit of black here and there, it will actually make the room look brighter. That little bit of contrast will bring out the lighter shades even more and make them look even lighter. Just don’t go overboard and make sure that you’re getting the balance right. Choose the thinner pieces of furniture in the room like chairs or standing lamps and make those black. That way, you’ll get the contrast but you won’t be filling the room with large areas of black. Avoid things like sofas and armchairs in darker colours because they’ll have the opposite effect and take in too much light.
Decorating a dark room is tough but don’t give up on it and turn it into a storage room. You can make it a comfortable space if you just use these simple hacks.
