If you have a little nest egg put away for a spot of DIY in your humble abode, the bathroom may be last on the list of rooms that you want to tackle. However, the old adage that kitchens and bathrooms sell houses is true (even if you aren’t planning on selling up anytime soon) and can lift the entire vibe of your family home. While living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms are the go-to areas for a lick of paint and a makeover, you shouldn’t neglect your bathroom. While you might not spend that much time in there, it can still be pleasant to have a little pampering sanctuary should you need it after a particularly stressful day at work with your overbearing boss. Take a look at these three surefire signs that you need to wave your magic interior design wand over your bathroom.
Mould
If you spotted black mould in any other room of your home, you would be tackling the spores as quickly as possible. You recognise that these damp grubby marks can be a health hazard. However, when they appear in our bathrooms, we can let them linger as we explain them away as typical grout marks, heat and damp residue from hot showers and a lack of ventilation. While this may be true, you still need to get rid of them. While a grout cleaner can help, sometimes you can be better off re-tiling your room. Whip off the floral patterned ceramic or the ocean-esque tiles and replace them with a clean, crisp marble effect or white tile. By choosing wider tiles, you need less grout, meaning there will be less opportunity for mould to develop. Use a sealant that is made specifically for use within bathrooms that is water resistant and ensure that you have an extractor fan fitted to combat any potential spores from forming.
Windows
The bathroom tends to be the smallest room in the house which tends to mean only one window. When this becomes draughty, or the fascia begins to crack, it can make the entire room look tired. Instead of replacing the glazing in its entirety, whip out a fascia repair kit, reseal your glazing and install some new blinds. When considering where to buy roller blinds, look for those companies that will allow you to order bespoke measurements before you install them yourself. This way, you can be sure of a perfect look but also save money on the final fitting. You could opt for metal effect, natural wood or Roman. However, roller blinds are flexible and look neat and crisp in any room.
The Suite
What colour is your bathroom suite? If it’s Barbie pink, avocado green or a rather fetching bourbon beige, then it’s time to get looking for a new one. Very few bathroom suites are any other colour than white nowadays. It’s hygienic, looks crisp and can naturally brighten any bathroom. You might want to add a touch of flair with a glass basin or add some wooden units or a vanity unit. Ensure that you purchase a suite with the most appropriate dimensions to suit your space and don’t be shy about re-configuring if this means you have more room to manoeuvre.
Your bathroom should be your little haven of relaxation. Perhaps it’s time that you took the plunge and gave your bathroom the makeover it deserves.
