Since our son was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (half a heart) in 2003 we have vowed that for Danny, half a heart will never mean half a life. We do everything we can to ensure that Danny lives as full a life as possible. As he grows older and more independent it’s clear that we’re not going to be by his side all of the time. In an emergency we may not be there to let the medics know of his medical condition when he is unable to. Thankfully he’s usually out and about with his good friends who know all about his medical needs. To cover all eventualities in case of an emergency occurring while he is alone Danny wears a medical alert bracelet.
Find a Medical Bracelet That You Love
We have been introduced to many medical ID bracelets over the years at Little Heart Matter Open Days and charity events. They all have the same basic purpose – to give vital information about your medical condition when you are unable to speak for yourself. Over the years we have realised how important is to find a medical bracelet that you love, or in our case that Danny loves. If you don’t love the bracelet, you’re not going to wear it and if you’re not wearing it then it can’t do it’s job (which ultimately could be to save your life). Therefore the most important thing is to find a medical bracelet that Danny loves and will wear every day.
Custom Medical Alert Bracelets from Butler & Grace
Butler & Grace have a range of fashionable custom medical alert bracelets which you can use to inform others of your medical condition, allergy or ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact. They come in a range of materials, colours and styles and all at an affordable price. The fashion conscious could buy in a number of styles to ensure each bracelet matches their outfit, or perhaps you could choose an everyday bracelet and one for special occasions.
Choosing Your Custom Medic Alert Bracelet
Danny chose the Ammo Grey Hematite Bracelet (£22.95).
“The Ammo bracelet features rapid fire grey hematite beads in a design that works with whatever you’re wearing. Strung on flexible beading wire, it should be taken on and off using the clasps.”
The front of the charm features the Caduceus symbol of emergency medicine so a professional can quickly see that he has a medical condition that they need to be aware of.
I love the style of this Ammo bracelet, it perfectly suits Danny’s style.
Personalising Your Custom Medic Alert Bracelet
We could personalise the back of the charm with up to three lines of text, each up to 11 characters/spaces. This meant we could fit the full name of Danny’s medical condition, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.
Measuring Up for a Custom Medical Alert Bracelet
Before ordering Danny’s medical alert bracelet we measured his left wrist (always measure the arm on which the bracelet will be worn). We then added an inch so he could wear it in a loose style (add half an inch for a tighter style).
On Warfarin Wristband
One consequence of Danny’s heart condition is that he will be on anticoagulants for life, in his case he is on Warfarin. If Danny had an accident or hurts himself he can bleed or bruise more easily. If he has a head injury it’s vital that we’re informed (cue lots of trips to school during Danny’s more boisterous junior school years). As a result of the medical implications of anti-coagulants Danny also wears an “On Warfarin Wristband” (£2.49).
These bands are a simple and effective way to communicate your medical condition or medication that you are taking. They are latex free, practical and affordable.
Can Be Used Alongside a Membership Service
Butler & Grace Custom Medical Bracelets are not a medical membership service. They feel that the most important information in an emergency are the details that are on the charm or tag of your bracelet and necklace. This means that there are no monthly fees – just a one off cost for your new medical bracelet.
If you are part of a membership service that requires an online log in or telephone number and a membership number, just include these details when you design the message for your disc. Or choose a design that you can engrave your own personal QR code on.
Personally, we feel reassured that medics will be able to find out the most important medical details about Danny immediately by looking at his bracelets. We also ensure he keeps his ICE contact up to date on his mobile phone too.
