On Thursday afternoon we attended the launch of the new Discover Coast and Cleddau Boat Trips at Milford Marina. I have been so excited about a regular boat trip service returning to “the docks” as although we live right next to the sea we don’t have a boat of our own so rarely get out “on the water”. Take a look at our photos from the launch and find out how to book a boat trip:
We made our way to the marquee for some refreshments. Sadly Danny wasn’t very well and Caitlyn was exhausted from her school trip to Carew Castle so in the end just Rebecca and Izzy came with me.
Clare Stowell, Director of Property and Tourism at the Port of Milford Haven, Aden Brinn JP, Chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council and Councillor Rose Gray, Mayor of Milford Haven, said a few words and then the Mayor cut the ribbon to officially open the boat tours.
The first group made their way down to the pontoon to board the first boat trip.
We enjoyed refreshments from Martha’s Vineyard, listened to the folk band and took in the marina view.
The girls were excited to spot MW Discovery return.
Look at our pretty town!
It was time for us to board Discovery. It’s very easy to step down onto the rib and and board the boat. The crew offer help too. I sent Rebecca first so I could pass Izzy to her until I boarded myself.
Walking into the cabin we discovered it’s like a bus- a bus on water. The seats have seat belts and a life jacket was placed on each seat. We listened to the safety talk and then we were off exploring the haven.
As it was such a beautiful day the sea was shimmering in the sun. It was glorious. The good thing about the enclosed cabin is you could enjoy a boat trip even on a rainy day (it’s also heated so a perfect way to explore the haven on a cold day too). I think on the longer trips you have a chance to sit on deck to get some good shots (as long as you wear the life jacket provided).
Every day I watch the ferry pass our house but it was amazing to get this close to it.
The crew told us about the sights we passed along the way. Stack Rock Fort is a Grade II listed building. The fort was built on the small island around 1850. It was one of a chain of forts designed to defend Britain and the Royal Naval Dockyard at Pembroke Dock against an invasion from France. It’s hard to imagine that at one point it was manned by up to 150 men and armed with 16 guns, each weighing 18 tons.
It was recently put back up for sale and they’re asking for offers in excess of £400,000. It will be interesting to see how the future owners develop this site.
Izzy enjoyed the view. The girls got very excited to see our home, local beach and their school from the sea. It’s the first time we’d seen their new school from this angle as it’s a new build.
We went to Watwick Bay, a quiet sheltered sandy beach and then returned as it was a short taster trip. Milford Marina have two trips for visitors to choose from:
“”Discover Coast” trips will see you venture out to sea on a guided tour past the “Heads” and beyond, to explore the natural beauty of the Pembrokeshire coastline. Our crew will take you on an adventure around Skomer Island, for wildlife spotting with a difference, and even a history lesson from our crew on the way
“Discover Cleddau” trips will take you up the Cleddau on a guided tour past the Port’s impressive array of industry, and onto the more tranquil areas of Benton, Rhoose Ferry, Cosheston Woodlands and Lawrenny, before returning to Milford Haven”
I am looking forward to booking onto both trips but especially the “Discover Coast” as Skomer Island is one of my favourite places.
