We all love the idea of opening our home to guests. Even the homebodies among us tend to look out for houses with an extra bedroom. Nothing beats knowing you can put people up whenever you need. This is fantastic for hosting guests and even helping friends in a pickle. As such, new homeowners eagerly imitate spare room designs like those found at www.elledecor.com, and invite everyone they can.

Over time, though, many of us let our guest rooms go to wrack and ruin. We may have had the best intentions when we looked out for that extra room, but how often do guests come? As such, many of us grow neglectful and being to use the spare room more like a junk room. So much so that, when it comes to hosting, we have to scramble and panic to get the room ready. If this is the reality every time you make plans, is it any wonder you don’t enjoy hosting guests as much as you used to? Just like that, it’s a headache instead of a pleasure. Part of you may even wish that you didn’t have that stupid spare room at all!

It doesn’t have to be that way. Hosting can become a joy again. All you need to do to make it so is to get your guest room ready to go, anytime. We’re going to look at how:

Kit it out

Many of us are guilty of never finishing our guest rooms. Perhaps you always meant to get a vanity, but never managed it. You may even get out a camp bed because you never invested in a proper bed. There are, of course, benefits to things like this. It means you can clear the space and use it for something else. Some of us even opt to invest in sofa beds and fold them away when we don’t have guests staying.

But, if you want a ready to go guest room, this may not be the best way to get it. After all, you may have to transfer vanities at the last minute and get the bed ready in a panic. Instead, consider kitting the room once and for all. You don’t even have to break the bank to do this. Heading to second-hand sales ensures that you can bag functional bargains. You could even head to sites like https:/mattress-guides.net, and find the best bargain mattresses money can buy. Then, when guests come, you can rest easy that the room is ready and waiting for them.

Speaking of ready, it’s also worth making the bed up just in case. None of us like making beds. And, the idea of making a bed no one is sleeping in can seem strange. But, keeping this bedding fresh ensures that you don’t need to rush up and make it if a guest pops in. The clean linen will be there waiting. This step can also help to keep the room looking fantastic at all times. It’ll even go far in avoiding the stuffy spare room smell. Instead, the scent of freshly laundered sheets will be all around. Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but you get the point. To keep on top of this, just make sure to change those sheets at least once a month.

Keep it clutter-free

Another cardinal spare room sin is that of junk. A shocking number of us get into the habit of sticking unwanted clutter into our spare rooms and forgetting about it. Once it’s behind that closed door, we don’t have to worry. Right? Wrong. The moment you get a call from a guest, you’ll send yourself into a panic trying to get rid of the stuff. If you’re a hoarder, you may even end up finding new places for that junk to go for the duration of their visit. It’s not a healthy way to be!

Instead, you should get a bin bag, and clear every single piece of clutter. If you haven’t even touched an item in months, you can be sure you don’t need it in your life. Be harsh here. You owe it to your spare room! If you’re struggling, consider the tips on sites like clearcalmspace.com, which can help you break the task into manageable chunks. Taking things in steps like this ensures that you can get the job done fast and without worry. Forget that last minute clear up; your guest room will be free and tidy at all times from now on.

Clean here when you do the rest of the house

Much like with the bed changing, you may wonder what the point is in cleaning your spare room. No one’s been in there making a mess, after all. Sure, the dust has built, but what’s the harm? In truth, though, this attitude is why so many of us have to get the polish and duster an hour before our guests arrive. And, in case you didn’t realise, cleaning under pressure isn’t a whole bundle of laughs.

Cleaning in here on a monthly basis, or even more often, can ensure that doesn’t happen to you. Plus, if you keep on top of things like this, you’ll find that the cleaning involved is minimal. A quick dust here, a hoover there, and you’re finished. This also has the benefit of getting rid of smells which build over time. More often than not, spare rooms develop a musty, mouldy smell due to their disuse. As mentioned already, changing the bedding can help here. But cleaning will also make a difference. You could even open the window for the duration of your cleaning. That way, there’s no risk of unpleasant smells sneaking up on the space.

So, you see, it isn’t difficult to keep on top of a ready-to-go guest room. If you host on a regular basis, these points will become even more crucial for you. But, even those who only have guests once a year or so should take note. You’ll thank yourself for it next time someone asks to stay.

Do you have a spare room? Do you keep it as a guest room? I’d love to hear your tips!
