If you’re bored with the environment you’re living in, now is a better time than any to change it up. It can be as minor or as drastic as you like, it all depends on what you’re working with and what you’d like to change.
It’s a new year, and a new you, and your home is supposed to be your safe haven where you can lock yourself away from the world when need be, so it should reflect that. If you’re living inside four walls that make you miserable, where are you going to find your peace?
Here are some ideas of how you can change the look of things, some small, some big.
Open space
Open floor plans are getting more and more popular as the years go on. They create a modern vibe that always seems to look pristine and classy. One way you can achieve this look is by taking down walls so you don’t have confined rooms anymore, but one large one instead. We have made our living and dining room open plan but I’d love to make our kitchen open too. But if you aren’t willing to put that much work into it, there are plenty of other ways you can give the appearance of an open space. One great trick is with mirrors as they reflect things, so when positioned correctly, you can give the human eye the illusion of a large, spacious room. Choosing light colours on the walls also open up a space, as opposed to dark colours.
Extensions
If you’re looking for an add-on that can be used as an office, another bedroom, or even a nice day room to hang out in, then maybe considering an extension is what you need to do. You may want to look at an aluminium conservatory from James Oliver to have ready for when the summer time comes. They make lovely areas that you can lounge around in and take some time out for yourself if things are getting to you. I love extensions made with bi-fold doors to lead right out into the garden. Conservatories are also great places to read thanks to all the natural lighting you have during the daytime.
New Kitchen
Perhaps your extension will be used to house a new kitchen. Friends of ours have recently built a new kitchen in their extension and kept their smaller original kitchen as a utility room. Imagine all that added kitchen space. Fitting a new kitchen in your home is a great investment too as it will increase the value of your property. Take a look at Glotech Kitchens website and showroom for lots of new kitchen inspiration.
Lighting
Lighting holds so much power over a room, although a lot of people don’t realise this until they put it to the test. If you’re used to a single bulb in the centre of your ceiling, remove that and introduce some more exciting ways to light up your home. Fitted ceiling lights are great for a bathroom and kitchen, while various lamps work very nicely in a living room. Play around with different heights, as this will create depth to your room, as well as creating a mood. Candles are also a lovely way to create an atmosphere to a room, while looking beautiful, providing you with a warm glow. Just make sure you don’t put them anywhere they can catch, like next to a curtain.
These are just a few ideas of many. So have a real think about what you’d like to do with your home, and then you can work to transforming it into a space that you can fall in love with all over again.
What plans do you have for your home this year?
