Friday was a great day as we went to book our family holiday and were also “ladies that lunch“. I’m trying to get into the habit of sharing my vegan meals out as I know it’s useful for others to see the options available. I tend to get a bit “lazy” and go to “chain restaurants” more since giving up dairy as they show vegan options on their website so it’s easier to see what’s available. I definitely like to know that there is at least one vegan option before I book somewhere. More and more independent cafes and restaurants have vegan choices available now so I’d like to promote more of these where I can. So here I’ll share with you what I had for lunch at The Georges, Haverfordwest.
We were going to Haverfordwest anyway to book our holiday. We’re returning to the South of France as we loved it there last year and still have things to tick off on our itinerary! We can’t wait. I will publish some holiday posts and videos soon!
The Georges is nestled on Market Street. We parked in St Thomas Green Carpark (known as “The Green”) and walked from there. Look out for the two famous gargoyle dogs “guarding” this eating establishment and shop, walk past the sign telling you to leave your worries at the door and you’re in.
In their own words:
“Locals, regular visitors and the guide books all agree that The George’s is a quirky emporium, difficult to categorize, full of surprises – somewhere to relax, chat, dine and shop.”
The George’s is full of delight in every nook and cranny. There’s so much to see and I always feel inspired after a visit. I’d love to explore with my camera one day (sorry these are just quick phone snaps).
We had booked a table and rang ahead to let them know we were running late- booking the holiday took a little bit more time than we planned. They reassured us that it was fine and said to take our time. On arrival we ordered our drinks at the bar, then made our way to our table to look over the food menu. As we waited we noticed the amazing Simon Drew Puzzle place mats (available to buy in The George’s Shop)- they’re a great idea!
I forgot to take a photo of the menu but their menu is online– including the allergy menu (don’t forget to check the specials board too). Local vegan friends had recommended the vegan Mushroom Stroganoff so I was hoping to have that but it wasn’t on the menu on this visit. Instead I ordered the Vegan Ratatouille with a side salad (£7-£8) and it was delicious.
The salad was full of flavour and pomegranate seeds. The ratatouille was just the hot, comforting food that you need on a wet winter’s day. They use local produce and suppliers where possible and grow some of their own organic fruit and veg in their Walled Garden on the Penty Parc estate.
We didn’t have time to look at the dessert menu or in the shop as we were actually called back to the travel agents as they had discovered a deal where we could have an extra night for the same prize (bargain!). Then I had to rush home for the school run. I used to go to The George’s regularly before having the kids and am determined to visit more often again in the future!
The George’s is open for lunch Tuesday – Saturday: 10.00 am – 5.30 pm. Last food orders 4.30. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for special events (in the past they have held a curry night with a vegan curry option).
