“Hip and Hop: You Can Do Anything” saved me from boring myself one long bedtime evening. I love reading books to my younger children (and with my older kids), but some nights after a busy, tiring day I admit I’m secretly longing for story-time to be over so I can crash out and read a grown up book of my own- please tell me I’m not the only one!). When you’re in this mood, you really need a good children’s book to get you motivated and Hip and Hop is definitely motivating (“You can do anything if you try!“).
Hip and Hop is written by the MOBO award-winning hip hop artist, Akala and colourfully illustrated by acclaimed artist, Sav Akyüz. Hip is a wise Hippo and Hop is his energetic bird friend. The book is part prose, part rap, full of rhyme and rhythm which makes it a joy to read.
“Hope loves to dance. Hip loves to rhyme.
Come and Join them. It’s Hip and Hop time.”
Everyone is getting ready to take part in the Blueberry Hill bike race. Hop struggles at first as he doesn’t know how to ride a bike, but with help from Hip, and their friends, he learns that he can achieve anything if he puts his mind to it.
“You can do anything if you try,
You can do anything, ride or fly.
Don’t let anybody tell you no.
Focus on your dreams and go!”
Hip reminds Hop that “We’re all beginners when something’s new”, so he practises and practises until he can ride his bicycle, take part in the race and follow his dreams.
This book is great fun to read (and “bad mum rap”) along to. The kids loved joining in and we repeated the last rap over and over many times. The repeated positive mantra is encouraging and inspirational for kids to hear. The book ends asking “What dreams will you follow?” which I think is an wonderful question to end the day with.
This is the first book in a new series of books for Oxford University Press that aim to inspire children to grow up as happy, emotionally intelligent and socially responsible human beings. We can’t wait to read the next instalments.
Hip and Hop: You Can Do Anything is released on 6th July and you can enter a Rafflecopter competition to win a copy below (please read the terms and conditions).
Good luck!
