This year is a great year for Musicals. It is still only January and I have already seen Les Miserables at the Cinema and Phantom of the Opera on tour at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.
I am trying to decide what to see next. I know I would love to see Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera Live in London. The next big musicals coming to Wales Millennium Stadium are Hairspray and Ghost. I loved Ghost the Movie, but I have no idea what to expect from the Ghost the Musical. I enjoyed both Hairspray Movies, the old Ricky Lake one and the newer one, which is more closer to the stage version,; therefore I know Hairspray would be a great musical; that both the kids and myself would enjoy.
I am about to vote for my favourite musicals this year in the Whatsonstage.com Awards. It is important for the audience to show support to the musicals they have enjoyed in this way and these are the only awards that are voted by the public across ALL the categories.
The category that I like to look out for is “Best New Musical“. This years nominations are Daddy Long Legs, Loserville, Soho Cinders, Sweet Smell of Success, The Bodyguard and Top Hat. I loved Bodyguard the movie, but the Best new Musical that stands out for me is “Top Hat“, all those glorious tap dancing numbers, jazz hands and Hollywood glamour, are a recipe for success.
Tom Chambers (Holby City, Waterloo Road), the star of Top Hat has been nominated for Best Actor in a Musical. It would be lovely if this Strictly Come Dancing Winner could win this award before he leaves the show in February.
His co-stars have also been successful in the nominations department. Both Vivien Parry and Richard Afonso have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor in a musical, respectively.
With all the fabulous footwork in this stylish musical, it is no surprise that Bill Deamer has been nominated for Best Choreographer.
Just take a look at this video if you need to see why:
